Emily Johnson is the only child of much loved friend, sommelier and all around good bloke Mark Johnson who died last month. This fundraising dinner is a one-off event to assist wife Anna to provide Emily with the opportunities that had he lived, Mark would have wished for her.

The symptoms of Mark's illness became apparent in the week of Emily's birth. He was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of Multiple Myeloma and spent the first 10 months of Emily's life in an experimental treatment program. Sadly the cancer was too aggressive and Mark died on the 8th of June this year, just weeks short of Emily's first birthday.

Mark came to the wine industry mid-life, changing course to make his passion for food and wine into a career. In 2008, Mark and Anna moved to Tooborac where her family have lived for generations and to fulfil his dream to live and work in a wine region. Soon after, Mark joined us at Cellar & Store. Mark quickly established himself as an articulate judge and an independent palate.

His talent was blindingly obvious to all he encountered in the industry. He was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Lorenzo Galli Scholarship in 2008. That year he also won the Negociants Australia Wine Fellowship Writing Award and his winning article was subsequently published in Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine. Mark was just starting to carve his niche when his illness was diagnosed.

We are delighted that Dinner for Emily will be cooked by Jacques Reymond. One of Mark's favourite photos of himself is an image taken at the front of this Melbourne food institution. Jacques Reymond remained one of Mark's food gods, and his meals were eagerly anticipated and long remembered.

Dinner for Emily will be complemented by the wines of M. Chapoutier and also of Jasper Hill. In February 2009 as part of his Master of Wine Appreciation, Mark felt himself entirely blessed to be accepted by Ron and Elva Laughton and their daughters Emily and Georgia at Jasper Hill to complete the 2009 vintage. His experience with them was absolutely a career highlight and it is no coincidence that the little girl we are helping out tonight shares her name with this iconic wine and delightful winemaker. Generosity is a Laughton Family hallmark and their donation of the 2009 Emily's Paddock (prior to its official release) at the dinner is a tribute to the regard in which they held Mark.
