We are very pleased that Thierry Michon, from Domaine Saint-Nicolas, will be in Melbourne on Wednesday 7 November.
We realise this is one of the biggest weeks of the year for Melbourne's restaurants but unfortunately, because this trip is tied in with a Renaissance des Appellations event in Tokyo, it's the only date that fitted with his schedule. We hope that you might be able to find a couple of hours to join us, meet Thierry and learn about the place where he works, how he works and the wines he makes.
Domaine Saint-Nicolas is within Fiefs Vendeens, one of France's newest AOCs (only since 2011). South of the mouth of the Loire River, Thierry's vineyards are in Ile d'Olonne, on the Atlantic coast, which is also known for its fine sea salt, especially fleur de sel.
He cultivates 40 hectares biodynamically (certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Demeter). The vineyards have been farmed organically since 1995.
He grows Pinot Noir, Gamay, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Groslot Gris, Cabernet Franc, and Negrette, an almost forgotten grape more usually found in Fronton. These grapes are the building blocks from which he makes an extensive range of naturally-fermented wines, some from single varieties and others which are blends.
This 90 minute session will be a tutored tasting, including current and older vintages of an extensive selection of his wines. He'll talk about his vineyards, his methods of viticulture, and, of course, his wines. Fresh from vintage, it will also be one of the first opportunities to hear a first-hand opinion and ask questions about the 2012 French harvest.
We have also asked Josh Murphy at the Builders Arms to choose some small dishes to complement the wines so you can also try them with food, the way they have been made to be enjoyed. Of course there will be oysters, the traditional accompaniment to Thierry Michon's Les Clous, but we will have other tastes as well, reflecting the diversity of the flavours and textures in his wines.
It is a free event but spaces are limited so an RSVP is essential.
Please email us at wine@livingwines.com.au if you would like to attend.
